Somerset's Appalachian Advantage:
Some of the finest lumber in the world comes from the Appalachian Mountain region of the U.S., where Merrick Hardwoods is strategically located. The lumber is considered superior because of the benefits inherent in the location and the land. The climate is a main factor in producing the naturally superior quality. The slower growth of trees results in high growth rings, consistent grains, and strong fibers that lead to strength, durability, and beauty.

Product Information

One of the most common, specialty uses of basswood is for Venetian blinds. Other main uses include furniture, moldings, interior joinery, carving, turning, musical instruments, pattern making, mallet heads, picture frames, boxes, crates, toys. Because it is odor-free, it is often used for food containers.

The sapwood of basswood is typically large and creamy white in color with heartwood that is pale to reddish brown. The texture is fine and uniform with straight grain that is indistinct.

Basswood machines well using power and hand tools, making it excellent for carving. It nails, screws, and glues well and can easily be sanded, stained, and polished to a smooth finish.

Basswood has a Janka Hardness Rating of 410 (compared to red oak at 1290). It is a soft and lightweight wood, and thereby is weak. It has low strength and poor steam bending properties. It is resistant to warping (which is one reason it is a great choice for window blinds).

We work hard to be a different kind of company—one that does the right thing, because it’s the right thing to do.
